You've Automated Payroll. But Who's Handling the HR Side of Your Business?

You've got payroll software.

Your employees get paid on time. Their deductions are calculated. Their pay stubs are available online.

Great!

That's one less thing to worry about.

But who's handling everything else that comes with having employees?

Because there's quite a bit more to managing a team than making sure everyone gets paid.

And if you're a small business owner, there's a good chance a lot of that work is still landing on your desk.

Payroll software is great. But it doesn't do everything.

Maybe you own a cleaning company with six employees.

Or a busy retail shop with a mix of full-time and part-time staff.

Maybe you've got a landscaping crew, a growing wellness business or a bakery that's just hired its third employee.

You've found payroll software that works for your business. It calculates wages, deductions and vacation pay, and your employees get paid on schedule.

Wonderful.

But now you've hired someone new.

Who's making sure their paperwork is completed?

Who's collecting the information needed to set them up properly?

Who's organizing their employee file, keeping track of training and making sure they have what they need before their first day?

And what happens when someone requests vacation time, has a question about their benefits or needs an update made to their employee records?

Your software might help with some of those things.

But someone still needs to make sure they're actually being handled.

And in a lot of small businesses, that someone is the owner.

The employee paperwork doesn't stop after the first day.

Think about everything that happens after you hire someone.

An employee changes their address or banking information.

Someone requests time off.

A training certificate is coming up for renewal.

Your business introduces a new policy that needs to be communicated to the team.

An employee leaves, and there are records, paperwork and other responsibilities to take care of.

None of these things necessarily takes hours on its own.

But they add up.

And when you're already looking after customers, managing schedules, ordering supplies, answering inquiries and trying to grow your business, it's easy for employee administration to become something you deal with whenever you have a spare moment.

Which, let's face it, isn't always very often.

The problem is that some of these responsibilities have deadlines, affect employees directly or involve information that needs to be handled carefully.

They're not really the kind of things you want to keep pushing to next week.

And then there are the questions that aren't so straightforward.

Not everything involving employees has a simple answer.

What happens when someone has a question about overtime?

How do you handle vacation entitlements?

What records should you be keeping?

What needs to happen when someone leaves the company?

What if you're hiring your very first employee and aren't even sure what paperwork you need?

These aren't always questions you want to answer by guessing or searching the internet for five minutes.

Employment requirements can vary depending on where your business operates, the industry you're in and the circumstances involved.

And while software can help organize information and automate calculations, it doesn't replace having someone experienced who understands the responsibilities behind it.

For complex employment matters, appropriate legal or other professional advice may also be needed.

You don't have to figure out every HR responsibility yourself.

I think some business owners hear the words human resources and immediately picture a big company with an entire HR department.

But you don't need 50 employees to have HR responsibilities.

You have them as soon as you start employing people.

And you don't necessarily need a full-time HR employee to get help managing them.

Maybe you need someone to organize employee files and make sure records are kept up to date.

Maybe you need a consistent onboarding process so every new hire gets the same information and paperwork.

Maybe your policies and employee handbook need attention.

Or maybe you've grown from two employees to ten, and the informal way you've been handling things just isn't working as well anymore.

The point isn't to create more paperwork. It's to make sure the important things are actually getting done.

That's where AnchorPointe can help.

At AnchorPointe, we offer both HR Support and Payroll Services.

And while they work well together, you don't have to use both.

If your payroll software is working beautifully and you're happy with it, great. Keep it!

We can work alongside your existing systems to help with the HR responsibilities that still need someone's attention.

Our team includes Meredith, a Payroll Compliance Professional with more than 20 years of experience in payroll and HR, including working with construction companies and unionized environments.

That experience matters because managing employees isn't always as simple as filling out a form or clicking a button.

Sometimes you need someone who understands the details, knows what to look for and can help keep things organized and moving.

Whether that's employee onboarding, recordkeeping, policies, benefits administration or ongoing HR support, we can look at what your business actually needs.

And if payroll is something you'd also like help with, we can have that conversation too.

So here's my question.

You've got a system for paying your employees. But do you have a system for managing everything else that comes with employing them?

If the answer is yes, fantastic.

But if employee paperwork is scattered across folders, onboarding looks different every time, or you're the person everyone comes to with every HR-related question, it might be time to look at how those responsibilities are being handled.

Not because your business is doing something wrong.

But because your employees deserve consistency, and you deserve to know that the important things are being looked after.

Payroll is one piece of the puzzle. The people side matters just as much.

If you'd like to talk about HR support for your business — with or without payroll services — reach out to AnchorPointe. We can look at what you're currently managing, where you could use some support and what makes sense for your team.
